1303 Summit Avenue’s Artisan Crafted Stair Railing

When you tour 1303 Summit Road (Lafayette, CA) during this weekend’s Sunday open house (1-4pm), take a close look at the metal stair railing located just as you walk through the front door.

Designed by Architect Ed Kaplan and crafted by Janusz Olszewski of Olszewski Iron Design, this custom railing was commissioned and installed during the home’s extensive remodel (2005/6).

Artisan Crafted Stairwell at 1303 Summit Road, Lafayette CALooking at the railing, it’s easy to notice the high quality artisan craftsmanship, and the way the railing punctuates the beauty of the foyer and the room just beyond, a pre-remodel dining room now being used by the current homeowners as a music room.

It’s interesting, though, to also notice what’s missing: There are no visible bolts to mar its beautiful lines or overall impact. And yet, the railing is as sturdy and strong as it is beautiful.

“We wanted a streamlined railing that would make a statement, given that it’s the first thing you see when you walk in the home,” Kaplan said in the Contra Costa Times article titled, “Know what you want before remodel,” published on October 7, 2007.
