One of the many things that I love about living in Lafayette is that we are a town of lifelong learners who don’t have to go very far to learn something new from subject matter experts speaking at a public event. Many Lafayette public and private venues host a wide variety of speakers each year that often cost little or nothing to attend.
You’ll find much of this happening at the Lafayette Library and Learning Center, at events sponsored by the Library, the Friends of the Lafayette Library and Learning Center and other community partners like the Lafayette Chamber. There are also many Glenn Seaborg Consortium Partner programs held at the Library, including Commonwealth Club of California speaker events. And, since the library space is rentable, there are privately sponsored events there, too.
You can also hear many speakers at events hosted at the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, various local businesses and other Lafayette organizations, including our many local religious institutions.
One relatively new speaker series designed for parents is sponsored by the Lamorinda Family Center, which falls under the umbrella of the Lafayette Orinda Presbyterian Church, located on Knox Drive in Lafayette’s Hidden Valley neighborhood. This secular series offers something unusual – child care is included in the price of the adult attendee’s ticket (typically $10 per person). Fall 2013 topics include: Building Resilience in Children and Teens (September 22), Bullying and Social Media (October 13), and Protecting Your Relationship While Raising Children (October 27). If all this sounds like a lot of learning options, just know, we haven’t even gotten to Saint Mary’s College events yet. Located just beyond the Lafayette border along Saint Mary’s Road, in Moraga, Saint Mary’s hosts many top quality speakers each year, programs that are typically open to the public at little or no charge.
How will you find out who is speaking about what topic, where and when? Since the lion’s share of this is happening at the Lafayette Library and Learning Center, start by perusing the calendar at Lafayettelib.org, where you can also sign up to receive periodic event information by email.
There are also event calendars on each event host website as well as in the Lamorinda Weekly (online and print versions). Both LamorindaWeb and the Lamorinda Patch have event information online, too.
