Lafayette’s Halloween “It” Neighborhood Math – and a Thank You

We all have our Halloween neighborhood memories of trick-or-treating local “insider tips” — which neighbor gave out full-sized candy bars, who went all-out with the decorations, and who did the best job scaring visitors. These tips, though, changed through the years as people moved in or out of the neighborhood.

Here’s a Lafayette Trick or Treat tip that’s been true for so long it has become a Lafayette Halloween tradition — and it doesn’t change even when people sell their homes.

If you’re looking for “the” place in Lafayette to Trick or Treat, the zone that draws so many kids that home sellers sometimes disclose the event when they put their house on the market, head to the streets near Burton Valley Elementary on Halloween night, starting with the loop along Merriewood Drive and Silverado.

How big is big? Not as big as folklore would have you believe. Still – it is the fun, happening place!

Here’s the math according to one long-time Merriewood Drive homeowner:

“I usually buy about 350-400 big bars and hand one out to each and then go to small bars. So my best guess  is somewhere between 650-1000, depending on year.  All ages from parents with kids who can’t walk (in a Snugly – true!), to high school kids.”

Growing up in Burton Valley this was my favorite Trick or Treat loop! My parents knew it would be safe for my sisters and I, and we knew it would equate to a fun night and more candy than we could dream of.

I love that it has become a lasting tradition and now appreciate the adult side of the equation! Halloween is not an inexpensive night.

Thanks to all the wonderful homeowners for making this an unforgettable evening.
