Have you noticed? There is something fun happening at the Friends Corner Book Shop – and this week it’s taking the form of a temporary art installation using books.
“This is part of series of book art projects that are designed to make the shop a more interesting place,” says Ruth Thornburg, President of the Friends of the Lafayette Library and Learning Center (“Friends”). “The first was in conjunction with ‘The Day in Lafayette’ photo project where we built two club chairs out of books outside the shop and displayed folded book art that we made. One of our board members had their photo from that day selected to be in the Day in the Life photo exhibit.”
The Friends Corner Book Shop (“Book Shop”) is located at the corner of 1st Street and Golden Gate Way, in the lower level of the Lafayette Library and Learning Center building. Operated and staffed by volunteers from the Friends, the Book Shop sells books donated by community members that are priced to sell quickly (usually $1-2) because the flow of donations is so constant that the shelves, which can hold 25,000+ books, restock quickly. So quickly that the Book Shop helps the Friends earn well over $100,000 each year to support the Library. In the fiscal year ended June 30, 2013, that number was closer to $135,000.
The current installation will only be up for a few days so, if you want to see it in person, now is your moment! When you get there, please take a moment to tour the store, too. If you’re new to the Book Shop, you’ll be glad you did!
