It’s the time of year when we think about our lives, our families, and all that we are thankful for. And, we definitely have much to be thankful for here in the Lamorinda area. It’s also the time of year when we consider what we might be doing for others whose needs are greater than our own. I recently posted a blog about volunteerism, with links to City of Lafayette committees and commissions, and to local community organizations who are always seeking helpers. I’ll go a bit deeper here with a list of volunteer activities in which you and your children can participate. It’s never too early to teach our kids about the rewards of giving back.
Deliver meals to senior citizens: Via Meals on Wheels, you and your child can prepare and deliver meals to homebound seniors in the community, and help to spread some cheer.
Shop for the food bank: While doing your weekly grocery shopping, add a few items to your cart for donation to the Food Bank. You can deliver directly to the Concord warehouse.
Donate hair to help sick kids: This one-time grand gesture really makes a huge impact on both the donor and the recipient. Wigs for Kids is our recommendation.
Gather comfort items for homeless children: Project Night Night gathers new blankets, stuffed animals, and books for distribution to homeless children. Purchase a minimum ten bags at $3.50/per and fill them with items collected by your child and his/her friends.
Donate a bike: Give your rarely used and unwanted bikes to Charity Bike Institute who will refurbish and restore them, and donate them to individuals in need.
Foster a pet: Hopalong and Second Chance Animal Rescue seeks foster families for cats and dogs until permanent, adoptive homes are found.
Help Sonoma County fire victims: Crack open the piggy bank and make a donation to the Sonoma County Resilience Fund that addresses long term needs of those impacted by the recent devastating NorCal fires.
Clean-up your neighborhood: This one is easy. Grab some gloves and a trash bag and gather litter on your block.
Need other suggestions? Click this DoSomething.org link, pick from one of the many projects on the site, and participate in a global movement for good. Even the smallest gesture can make a huge difference.
Wishing you a very Happy Thanksgiving!
