Our Favorite Walks and Hikes

The sky is blue, the wildflowers are blooming, and the East Bay’s multitude of open spaces beckon. There’s no better time to enjoy our trails. I love hiking the ridge in Burton Valley’s Lucas Ranch. Start at the Lucas Ranch gate (at the very end of Lucas) and walk up the paved streets. Turn left at the gravel road at the top of the hill and follow it until it ends at the gate. Then head back and take-in the wonderful views.

We’ve all got our favorite walking and hiking routes, but its fun to mix things up once in awhile. To provide a bit of inspiration, I’ve asked my team to share their favorite local hikes. Please check each trail website before heading out to learn current protocols.

You can’t beat the 4.9 miles, close-to-home Lafayette Reservoir Rim Trail for views and heart-pumping hills.

I love walking the Moraga Country Club golf cart paths, open to the public every Monday. Lauren Woolsey

Our family’s favorite hiking trail is the Springhill Sunrise Loop that begins at the very end of Springhill Road. A steady climb to the top of the ridge is rewarded with spectacular Mt. Diablo views. Emily Forschler

My favorite hike is the trek up to the Victoria Cross at St. Mary’s College. It’s a fairly short walk but with a nice, steady climb and the view is always inspirational.  Sarah Kellar

I head to the Oakland/Berkeley hills for my favorite hike within Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve. From Highway 24 take Fish Ranch Road and continue about a mile to a left on Grizzly Peak Boulevard. Go 2.4 miles to Skyline Boulevard, turn left and the entrance is on the left. It’s worth the drive. Jill Montaquilla

Carr Ranch is my go-to hike. Drive to the end of Camino Pablo in Moraga to Rancho Laguna Park The EBMUD trailhead is at the fence behind and to the left of the play area. Follow the signs for Rocky Ridge Trail and Carr Ranch Loop Trail. Ann Marie Quinn
